Associate Professor Gene Hodgins is a Clinical Psychologist and academic at Charles Sturt University (CSU), based in Wagga Wagga. He holds roles including Associate Head of School (School of Psychology) and previously served as Sub-Dean Honours in the Faculty of Arts. His career includes clinical work in rural mental health, emergency service personnel support, and academic leadership roles at CSU, Monash University, and Melbourne University’s Centre for Rural Mental Health. He returned to CSU in 2006, progressing from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer (2009) and Associate Professor (2017).
Teaching focuses on active, student-centric methods, including flipped classrooms and real-world case studies. Notable recognition includes the 2016 CSU Faculty of Arts Teaching Excellence Award.
Research Interests: Improving rural mental health through clinician training and stigma reduction; mental health of workers in high-stress roles (emergency services, journalism); and anxiety/depression management. Collaborations include the Aspro Psychology Health Services Research Group and Workforce Wellness Research Unit.
Affiliations & Memberships: Registered Psychologist (Australia), Medicare Registered Clinical Psychologist, Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, Board-approved supervisor (clinical and higher degree).
Grants & Supervision: Supervised over 80 students across Honours, Masters, and PhD programs. Current projects focus on trauma in emergency workers, rural mental health interventions, and disaster recovery programs.
