Gemma Sou is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Monash University, Australia, with affiliations including Honorary Fellow at the University of Manchester and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Her research focuses on disaster studies, postcolonial theory, and creative research methodologies. She holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and previously held positions there and at RMIT University.
Her work explores disaster recovery through a postcolonial lens, examining household experiences, global aid dynamics (e.g., China’s relationships with small island states), and innovative communication methods like graphic novels. Notable projects include the After Maria comic series and the Resilient and Sustainable Islands Initiative (2025–2026). She emphasizes qualitative, feminist approaches and interdisciplinary collaboration.
