Gemma King is DECRA Fellow and Senior Lecturer in French at the Australian National University's School of Literature, Languages & Linguistics. Her ARC DECRA project 'Sign on Screen' (2023-2026) investigates sign language representation in global cinema through Deaf-hearing collaboration, partnering with Deaf Connect and the National Film and Sound Archive.
Research explores:
- Sign language representation and Deaf perspectives in film/television
- Multilingualism and power dynamics in French/Francophone cinema
- Disability and postcolonial representation on screen
- Intersections of language, identity, and cultural production
Authored works include:
- Decentring France: Multilingualism and Power in Contemporary French Cinema (2017)
- Jacques Audiard (2021) in Manchester University Press's French Filmmakers series
