Darren Waldron is a Senior Lecturer in Film Studies within the Department of Drama at The University of Manchester. He specializes in representations of sexuality, gender, race, ethnicity, film stardom, and authorship. His teaching portfolio includes courses on world cinema, queer bodies in cinema, French cinema history, and black representation on screen. He holds a PhD on French cinema and audience reception (2003), following a career transition from finance and charity work in London during the 1990s.
Research interests span French/Spanish queer cinema, French film directors (e.g., Jacques Demy, Xavier Dolan), stardom analysis (e.g., Alain Delon, Isabelle Huppert), and the intersection of narcissism/masculinity in cinema. He co-authored French and Spanish Queer Cinema (2016) and edited volumes on French stardom. Current projects include a study on narcissism in Pedro Almodóvar’s films and Francophone West African cinema.
He received the 'Distinguished Achievement Medal for Teacher of the Year' (2005/6). Supervised PhD topics include French-Maghrebi cinema, queer narrative identities, and contemporary Chinese cinema. His work engages with existentialism, queer theory, and sensory cinema methodologies.
