Geli Li is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Macalester College, teaching composition, theory, and new music courses. A Chinese-born American composer with over two decades of professional experience, she creates innovative works bridging Eastern and Western musical traditions through acoustic and electronic media.
Her international academic journey includes:
- Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of Texas at Austin (funded by Academic Excellence Fellowship, Professional Development Award, and Kent Kennan Endowed Graduate Fellowship)
- Master's studies at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg (2014-2015)
- Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music Composition and Music Theory from Beijing's Central Conservatory of Music (completed with top honors)
Li's creative research focuses on cross-cultural musical dialogue, integrating traditional Chinese instruments with Western contemporary forms. Her compositions have been performed by over 30 ensembles globally including Orchestra of St. Luke's, Talea Ensemble, and Beijing Chinese Orchestra, and featured at major festivals like ManiFeste IRCAM and Oregon Bach Festival. Recent composer-in-residence positions include DeGaetano Composition Institute (2024) and Rodamúsic Composers Residency (2024).
