Prof. Dr. Geert-Jan Graulus is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) at Hasselt University's Faculty of Sciences, Department of Chemistry. He holds roles in the Materials Chemistry Research Group and Institute for Materials Research. His research focuses on responsive biomaterials, protein-based hydrogels, and bioorthogonal chemistry for biomedical applications. He obtained his PhD in polymer chemistry from Ghent University (2018) and transitioned to Hasselt University as a doctoral assistant, later becoming a part-time (2021) then full-time (2023) assistant professor.
Research interests include hydrogel design for cardiac stem cell delivery, biodegradation control, and sustainable materials from lignin. He supervises 12 PhD candidates, including projects on hydrogel carriers for stem cells and metal-free flotation using amphiphilic proteins. His teaching roles include coordinating courses like 'Materials for Advanced Healthcare' and 'Protein-Based Biomaterials.'
- Education: PhD in Polymer Chemistry (Ghent University, 2018)
- Affiliations: Royal Flemish Chemical Society, Belgian Society for Biochemistry
- Projects: 18 research initiatives, including hydrogel development for tissue engineering and sustainable biomass recovery
His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, with recent publications on self-healing hydrogels, bioorthogonal chemistry, and nanobodies for cancer detection. He actively contributes to curriculum development in STEM education.
