Gayun Chan-Smutko

Gayun Chan-Smutko is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Genetic Counseling department at MGH Institute of Health Professions, part of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. She holds a BS in Cellular Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan and an MS in Genetic Counseling from Brandeis University. Her academic focus combines clinical expertise in hereditary renal cell carcinoma with pedagogical innovation in genetic counseling education. She actively contributes to diversity initiatives through leadership roles in JEDI Councils, the NSGC J.E.D.I. Taskforce, and the AGCPD Diversity Taskforce.

Her research emphasizes psychosocial care for young adults with cancer predisposition, inclusive genetic counseling practices, and equity in healthcare education. Notable contributions include developing antiracism frameworks in graduate orientation and advocating for gender-inclusive pedigree documentation. She has received prestigious awards for teaching excellence and DEI leadership.

Professional service includes roles as Assistant Director of Brandeis' Genetic Counseling Program and clinical work at MGH Cancer Center from 2002-2018. Her advocacy extends to creating support networks like the Boston Minority Genetic Counselors group. Current initiatives focus on transforming genetic counseling education through DEI integration and advancing inclusive clinical practices.
