Gayle Ermer serves as a Professor and Department Chair within the Engineering Department at Calvin University, where she teaches core mechanical engineering courses including Dynamics of Machinery (ENGR 334), Materials and Processes in Manufacturing (ENGR 324), Engineering Instrumentation Laboratory (ENGR 382), and Introduction to Engineering Design (ENGR 101). Her leadership spans curriculum development and accreditation oversight.
Dr. Ermer earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University (1994) with dissertation research on three-dimensional bond graph system modeling for dynamics and control. She holds an M.S. in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1987) and a B.S. in Engineering with Mechanical Concentration from Calvin College (1986).
Her research integrates technical engineering domains with ethical and philosophical frameworks, emphasizing Christian perspectives on technology, quality control methodologies, continuous improvement in educational systems, and advocacy for women in engineering. This unique interdisciplinary approach bridges mechanical engineering fundamentals with societal impact analysis and pedagogical innovation in STEM education.
Professionally, she serves on the governing board of the Christian Engineering Society (CES) and as an ABET program evaluator for engineering accreditation. Her professional affiliations include the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), reflecting dual commitments to educational excellence and mechanical engineering practice.
