Esther Tian is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia’s First Year Engineering Center, specializing in engineering education, bio-inspired robotics, and engineering design. She also serves as faculty advisor for Engineers for Sustainable World at UVA. Previously, she helped establish the Engineering program at Eastern Mennonite University and attained its ABET accreditation. Her teaching includes courses like ENGR 1010/1020 and Special Topics in Engineering, emphasizing foundational engineering principles and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Her research focuses on bio-inspired robotics (e.g., biomimetic design), pedagogical innovations (e.g., project-based learning), and improving student outcomes through integrated curricula. She directed impactful student projects yielding patents, publications, and awards, including a first-place win at ASEE Zone II. Her work emphasizes ethics, societal service, and holistic student development.
Esther holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (UVA) and B.S./M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Changsha Institute of Technology. Outside academia, she enjoys hiking and reading.
