His educational background includes:
- PhD by Publication from University of Wolverhampton (2015-2016)

- BA(Hons) from Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff, Wales (1989-1992)

Ward's research critically examines socio-cultural knowledge construction, pedagogy, and the intersections of race, gender, and ability within educational and sporting contexts. His commissioned research for British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) exploring Race and Equality within university sport provision resulted in published recommendations that he is now helping implement. His work consistently challenges traditional pedagogies in physical education while promoting inclusive approaches that recognize diverse abilities and experiences.
His publication pattern reveals a significant shift toward critical race studies in the last five years, with multiple high-impact articles addressing racial equality in British university sports. Ward employs theoretical frameworks like intersectionality and transactional theory to analyze how racialized experiences manifest in campus life and sporting contexts, bridging academic theory with practical applications that can drive institutional change.
Ward's scholarly contributions have been recognized through:
- Best Paper award at the Leisure Studies Association Annual Conference (2019)
- Short-listing for Best Paper Award at the British Education Research Association Annual Conference (2015)
- Senior Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (2016)
As an academic leader, Ward serves as an external examiner for multiple institutions including the University of Edinburgh, Open University, Leeds Beckett University, and Canterbury Christchurch University. He supervises research degrees on topics including mental health in schools, rheumatoid arthritis and physical activity, sexuality, and chronic pain experiences. His grant-funded research includes the BUCS Race & Equality Research project (2021-2022), the Birmingham and Lewisham Black African and Black Caribbean Health Inequalities Review, and the Move It or Lose It evaluation.
Within the Sport and Physical Activity Research Centre (SPARC), Ward actively contributes to research that aims to transform sport and physical activity provision through an equality, diversity, and inclusion lens. His ongoing collaboration with BUCS following his race and equality research demonstrates his commitment to ensuring academic work produces tangible improvements in real-world sporting environments.
