Gavin Russell

Gavin Russell is a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at University College Cork, where he has taught since 1997. He serves as Director of the BA in Digital Humanities and Information Technology and coordinates Computer Science within the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Science.

He holds an MSc in Multimedia Technology from University College Cork (2000) and brings industry experience from web publishing, electronic commerce, and internet services sectors prior to his academic career.

Russell's research focuses on:immersive computing technologies through:

• Human-computer interaction design
• Mixed and augmented reality applications
• Secure payment systems development
• Web-based learning platforms

As a founding member of both the MAVRIC (Mixed Augmented Virtual Reality and Immersive Computing) and IDEAS research groups, he investigates multimodal systems with industry collaboration.

His publications demonstrate sustained interest in:

• Speech-enabled user assistance systems
• Wireless technology in education
• Courseware development methodologies

His work bridges technical development with practical educational applications.

Russell maintains an active role in university governance as an elected member of UCC's Academic Council since 2012. He contributes to computer science education through the UCC IT Experience Programme for secondary school students and advises school technology projects.
