Gavin Hollis

Gavin Hollis is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Hunter College CUNY, affiliated with the School of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on Shakespeare and early modern drama, exploring intersections of globalization, cultural geography, and cartography in the 16th–17th centuries.

Hollis investigates how early modern drama engaged with the New World, emphasizing critical responses to colonialism, material culture, and the social life of maps. His work spans close readings of canonical and neglected plays, including collaborations with Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe, and Thomas Middleton.

His forthcoming article in Shakespeare Survey (2025) and 2022 publications on memento mori and cultural politics highlight trends in cartographic anxiety, theatrical ethnography, and post-Reformation societal shifts. Awards include recognition from the Shakespeare Association of America and Globe Theatre.

Hollis teaches courses like ENGL 352 (Shakespeare Survey) and mentors students on MA theses and Mellon Fellowships. His work bridges literary analysis, historical context, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
