Dr Gavan Rafferty is a Lecturer in Spatial Planning and Development at the Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment, Ulster University. He serves as the Course Director for BSc/MSci Planning, Regeneration and Development, and is affiliated with the Built Environment Research Institute (BERI) and its Research on Property and Planning (RPP) Centre.
- Education: PhD (Queen's University Belfast), MSc in Town and Country Planning (with Distinction, Queen's University Belfast), BA in Geography (Queen's University Belfast), Pg Cert in Higher Education Practice (Ulster University).
His research focuses on:
- The intersection of community planning and spatial planning in post-conflict societies
- Community engagement and co-production in planning processes
- Inclusive planning for healthy, child- and age-friendly spaces
- Cross-border spatial planning in Europe, particularly on the island of Ireland
- Regeneration and urban governance frameworks.
His recent publications include studies on community resilience through alley greening, cross-border planning in Ireland, and post-Brexit spatial collaboration. He has coordinated the ERASMUS+ Community Participation in Planning (CPiP) project with partners in the UK, Portugal, and Italy.

He contributes to policy through roles on Belfast Healthy Cities' Healthy Places Group and Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council's Community Planning Officers Working Group.
