Gary Smith is the Fletcher Jones Professor of Economics at Pomona College, a position he has held since 1981. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College, and M.Phil and Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University. His research spans economics, finance, statistics, and data science, with a focus on critiquing flawed statistical practices and the misuse of AI in decision-making. He has authored numerous textbooks, including Essential Statistics, Regression, and Econometrics and The AI Delusion, and popular books like What the Luck? and Standard Deviations.
Smith’s honors include the Pomona College Wig Teaching Awards (1992, 1998) and the 2020 PROSE Award for The 9 Pitfalls of Data Science. His work addresses topics such as regression toward the mean, Tobin’s q, and the dangers of data mining. He has published over 150 academic papers, including seminal works on financial modeling, statistical reasoning, and the societal impact of technology.
Smith’s contributions extend to software development for economic education and innovative pedagogical approaches. He is a frequent speaker at conferences like the Western Economic Association International (WEAI) and has advised on policy issues ranging from real estate to pandemic health outcomes.
