Gary Rowley

Gary Rowley serves as Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA), where he also holds administrative roles as Faculty of Science Associate Dean (Employability) and Course Director for BSc Microbiology. His research spans medical and environmental microbiology with significant contributions to understanding bacterial pathogenesis and greenhouse gas regulation.

His research interests focus on two critical areas:

• Medical Microbiology: Investigating Salmonella Typhimurium's envelope stress response regulators critical for antimicrobial resistance and nitric oxide detoxification mechanisms during infection
• Environmental Microbiology: Studying bacterial denitrification processes, particularly nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions regulation through nitrous oxide reductase (NosZ) and the role of bacterial small RNAs (sRNAs) in controlling greenhouse gas production

His publication trends reveal a strong emphasis on molecular mechanisms linking bacterial stress responses to both human health threats and climate change mitigation. Recent work demonstrates how sRNA manipulation impacts denitrification rates and N2O emissions, with implications for agricultural management practices.

Rowley actively mentors students through BSc/MSci research projects and hosts PhD candidates like Reem Alshahrani. His current grant portfolio includes BBSRC-funded research on sRNA regulation of denitrification (2024-2027) and projects with the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia and Microbiology Society. He leads a research team comprising PDRA Dr. Corinne Appia-Ayme, technician James King, and PhD students.

His laboratory work directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and life on land through research on greenhouse gas mitigation.
