Klaus Butterbach-Bahl is a Professor and Centre Director at the Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University, Denmark. He leads the Center for Landscape Research in Sustainable Agricultural Futures (Land-CRAFT). His research focuses on greenhouse gas emissions, soil processes, and agricultural sustainability, with a particular emphasis on nitrous oxide and denitrification mechanisms. He is actively involved in projects such as the 'New emission factors for nitrous oxide from crop residues' (2024–2029), addressing IPCC methodology and N₂O emissions.
Key research interests include climate change mitigation, soil science, and environmental monitoring. He collaborates internationally and has contributed to over 60 publications since 2022. Notable recent works include advancements in soil chemical imaging systems and studies on nitrogen deposition impacts. Butterbach-Bahl also organizes conferences like the XXII International Nitrogen Workshop (2024) and holds an external role as Principal Scientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2022–2030).
