Andrew Gates is an Associate Professor of Bacterial Bioenergetics at the University of East Anglia's School of Biological Sciences. His research examines bacterial respiratory metabolism with focus on nitrogen cycle transformations, particularly denitrification pathways and nitrous oxide production in environmental systems.
Research pillars include:
- Molecular enzymology of nitrate/nitrite reduction
- Redox metalloprotein characterization
- Regulation of nitrogen assimilation
- Climate-active gas mitigation strategies
Dr. Gates employs interdisciplinary approaches combining molecular genetics, biochemistry, and biophysical techniques including Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy and Protein Film Electrochemistry. His laboratory forms part of the Centre for Molecular and Structural Biochemistry and Wolfson Centre for Advanced Environmental Microbiology.
Current projects investigate epigenetic control of nitrous oxide emissions in collaboration with the Nitrous Oxide Research Alliance. Gates has secured substantial research funding from UKRI-BBSRC and international partners.
