Dr. Gary Muscatello is a Senior Veterinary Microbiologist and Agriculture and Food Theme Lead (Education) at the University of Sydney's School of Life and Environmental Sciences. He holds a BVSc (Melb.), GradCertUnivTeach (Melb.), and PhD (Melb.).
His research focuses on veterinary microbiology, infectious diseases in equine and production animals, and the ecology of animal diseases. Key areas include Rhodococcus equi epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and the impact of climate change on disease transmission. Gary has secured research funding from the Thoroughbred industry and has authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers and a book chapter.
Teaching responsibilities include courses such as Agents of Disease and Veterinary Public Health. He supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, particularly on topics like Rhodococcus equi decontamination strategies.
Recent articles highlight his work on equine microbiome analysis, transport-related health issues, and zoonotic risks. Grants include studies on post-racing horse careers and bacteriophage applications in disease control.
