Dr. Kate Worthing is a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Sydney’s Sydney School of Veterinary Science, part of the Faculty of Science. She holds a BVSc (Honours) from the University of Sydney (2010), a PhD in molecular epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant staphylococci (2014), and a PGCert in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health. Prior to her current role, she held positions as an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona’s College of Veterinary Medicine and conducted postdoctoral research at institutions including the University of Melbourne, UC San Diego, and the USDA. Her research focuses on antimicrobial-resistant and zoonotic pathogens, integrating molecular and clinical epidemiology to address One Health challenges. She teaches courses on One Health, Research Methods, and Foundations using active learning strategies.

Her research interests include antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, zoonotic pathogen transmission, and the molecular epidemiology of veterinary pathogens. Notable projects include genomic surveillance of feline infectious peritonitis and investigations into antimicrobial peptides from commensal bacteria. She leads grants such as the 2024 “Genomic Surveillance of Feline Infectious Peritonitis” and the 2023 “Understanding Feline Upper Respiratory Tract Infections in Australia.”
Recent publications highlight her work on antimicrobial susceptibility in canine/feline pathogens, Clostridial infections, and the clinical utility of ChatGPT in veterinary education. She collaborates with the Charles Perkins Centre and emphasizes translational research to bridge clinical and environmental health challenges.
Teaching focuses on case-based learning and evidence-based practice, emphasizing One Health principles. Her lab’s future work includes expanding studies on antimicrobial stewardship and zoonotic disease dynamics.
