Gary Motteram is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Manchester Institute of Education, University of Manchester. His career spans over three decades in language education and technology integration, with a focus on teacher development in challenging contexts worldwide. He holds an MEd in Teaching English Overseas and an EdD focused on e-learning.
Key research interests include technology in language education, distance teacher education, and e-learning. Motteram has led impactful projects such as the AVALON and ReflectED initiatives, exploring virtual environments for language learning and teacher resilience in crises. His work with refugee teachers in Jordan and Syria, as well as collaborations in Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal, highlights his commitment to education equity.
Recent publications address pandemic-era teaching adaptations, digital tool utilization in resource-constrained settings, and teacher professional development through social media. Motteram has advised organizations like the British Council and Cambridge University Press, contributing to policy frameworks and pedagogical innovation.
He has managed over 20 international projects since 2003, including EU-funded initiatives and GCRF-backed research in fragile contexts. His expertise spans 17 UN SDGs, particularly targeting quality education (SDG 4) and partnerships for goals (SDG 17).
