Dr. Gary Bonar is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Curriculum Teaching & Inclusive Education at Monash University, Australia. His expertise spans Languages teaching, TESOL, English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), and Asia literacy. Prior to academia, he worked in Victorian secondary education as a Curriculum Coordinator for Literacy, Languages, and Social Sciences, with extensive experience teaching Japanese, Italian, and English in Asia and Europe.
His research focuses on Asia-related teaching in Australian schools and English-language learning in Asia, employing Q methodology to explore language teacher identity and educator perspectives. He has led and contributed to 12 research projects, including studies on EAL pedagogy, EMI professional learning, and culturally diverse early childhood education.
Dr. Bonar has been awarded prestigious scholarships, including the ASG PhD Scholarship (2013) and the ACIS Cassamarca Scholarship (2002). He teaches units in Languages Specialisation, TESOL, and Humanities Education across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. His supervision interests include EMI, TESOL, and Asia literacy studies.
He actively contributes to academic communities as an editorial board member of the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics and English Australia Journal, and peer reviews for journals like System and Current Issues in Language Planning. Collaborations span international projects in China, Indonesia, and Europe focusing on language education policies and practices.
