Prof. Gary Milavetz is the Executive Associate Dean and Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. He holds dual degrees in pharmacy (BS and PharmD from University of Minnesota) and is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (FCCP) and Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association (FAPhA). His research focuses on drug safety, particularly the impact of medications on driver impairment, respiratory disease pharmacotherapy, and cannabis effects on health and driving performance.
Research Interests:
- Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamics of respiratory medications
- Cannabis impairment mechanisms
- Drug-induced driving impairment analysis
- Aging populations and cannabis use trends
- Opioid alternative therapies
Key Findings: His work has advanced understanding of cannabis' effects on driving performance (via simulator studies), opioid efficacy in osteoarthritis, and cannabis' potential as an opioid alternative. His studies on pediatric asthma pharmacotherapy have influenced clinical guidelines.
Notable Awards:
- Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (FCCP)
- Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association (FAPhA)
Grants/Advising: Leads NIH-funded studies on cannabis-impaired driving and opioid substitution. Mentors graduate students in pharmacotherapy and public health.
Labs/Teams: Active in the College of Pharmacy's Drug Discovery and Experimental Therapeutics program, collaborating with traffic safety researchers and public health institutions.
