Professor Gary Lee is a world-leading academic and clinician in pleural medicine at the University of Western Australia (UWA). He holds roles including Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Director of Pleural Services, and Head of the Pleural Medicine Unit at the Institute for Respiratory Health. His work focuses on translational research addressing pleural diseases, particularly malignant pleural effusion and mesothelioma. He has pioneered clinical trials (e.g., AMPLE series) and developed novel therapies improving patient care globally.
Education: PhD in Pleural Fibrosis from UWA (2002), MBChB from University of Otago (1991). He has held positions at Oxford University, UCL, and Vanderbilt University. Current affiliations include Honorary Professorships at University of Hong Kong and Adjunct Professor at Edith Cowan University.
Research Interests: Integrating clinical care with bench research to advance diagnostics and treatments for pleural conditions. Key areas include improving effusion management via clinical trials, multidisciplinary care (nutrition/psychology/exercise), and translating lab discoveries into clinical practice.
