Gary Kynoch is a Professor in the Department of History at Dalhousie University. His research focuses on South African history, including conflict in 20th-century Africa, urban African history, and crime. He has authored significant publications on these topics and teaches courses such as HIST 4401: State Violence, Communal Conflict and Criminality in Modern South Africa.

Kynoch’s recent work examines public order policing in post-apartheid South Africa and historical violence in urban areas like Cato Manor. His publications bridge political, social, and criminal history, analyzing systemic issues in modern African contexts.
He is currently teaching HIST 4401 in Winter 2025, focusing on state violence and criminality in South Africa. Office hours are available on Mondays from 12:30–2:00 or by appointment.
