Dr. Anne Heffernan is an Associate Professor of Southern African History in the Department of History at Durham University. She specializes in modern South and Southern African history, focusing on student/youth activism during apartheid, political ideology development, and the segregation of higher education. Her research employs regional case studies and archival analysis to trace networks within historically black universities.
Research Focus
Her work investigates:
- Propagation of Black Consciousness in education systems
- Transnational influences on apartheid-era universities
- Rural-urban youth networks in liberation movements
- Legacies of segregated education in post-apartheid South Africa
