Professor Gary Craig is a Visiting Professor at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and York St John University, and Honorary Professor at the University of York. His primary research focuses on modern slavery, race and ethnicity, community development, and local governance. He has directed over 100 research projects for organizations such as the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, OECD, and EU, addressing issues like forced labor, migration, and racial justice. Craig has authored/co-authored nearly 300 publications, including seminal works on modern slavery and racial inequality. He holds fellowships with the Royal Society of Arts and Academy of Learned Societies in Social Sciences, and received notable awards like the 2014 Marsh Award for combating modern slavery. Beyond academia, he chairs the North East Regional Race Equality Forum and co-convenes the Modern Slavery Research Consortium.
His research consistently bridges policy and practice, emphasizing grassroots activism and institutional accountability. Recent projects include analyzing anti-trafficking legislation in the EU and mapping racial justice in Yorkshire. Craig’s work integrates global perspectives with local governance challenges, particularly in marginalized communities.
