Gary Chastagner is a Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at Washington State University, specializing in ornamental plant diseases and serving as an Extension Specialist at the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center since 1999. His work focuses on managing Phytophthora ramorum (Sudden Oak Death) and enhancing postharvest quality of Christmas trees.
- PhD in Plant Pathology (1976), MS in Plant Pathology (1973) from University of California – Davis
- A.B. in Biology and Industrial Arts (1971) from California State University – Fresno
Key research areas include Phytophthora epidemiology, Christmas tree disease management, and postharvest physiology. His recent publications highlight risks of pathogen spread in ornamental and forest ecosystems, fungicide efficacy, and genetic variation in conifer species.
