Matteo Garbelotto is a Cooperative Extension Specialist and Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, within the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management (ESPM). His research focuses on forest pathology, mycology, and management strategies for forest diseases. Key areas include the study of exotic pathogens like Phytophthora ramorum (Sudden Oak Death), fungal ecology in mangroves and truffles, biodiversity conservation through barcoding projects, and molecular diagnostics for pathogen detection. He leads the Forest Pathology and Mycology Lab, which develops tools for disease control, including phosphonate treatments and biological controls. His work bridges applied and basic science, addressing environmental challenges such as climate change impacts and invasive species.
Research Interests: Exotic forest pathogens, fungal community dynamics, biodiversity inventories, and genomics of plant pathogens. He has pioneered studies on Heterobasidion spp. and Seiridium spp. invasions, as well as the role of drought in disease severity.
Advising and Grants: Garbelotto mentors students in environmental science and collaborates on projects funded by USDA, NSF, and international grants. Recent teaching includes special topics (ESPM 150, 290) and supervision of independent research (ESPM 299). His lab actively engages with land managers to translate research into practical solutions.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Garbelotto Group, part of UC Berkeley’s ESPM, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to forest health. Collaborates globally on projects like BioCode (Moorea) and Venice Fungal Herbary Barcoding.
