Gary Carpenter is a Professor at the Royal Northern College of Music and a prominent composer known for his operas, ballets, orchestral works, and musical theater compositions. He studied composition at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London under Humphrey Searle, Thea Musgrave, and John Lambert, and participated in masterclasses with Nadia Boulanger. His works include The Streets Of London, Goodnight Mister Tom – The Musical, ballets for Nederlands Dans Theater, and the radio music-drama The One Alone with Iris Murdoch.

His research interests focus on contemporary classical music composition, orchestration techniques, and the intersection of music with theater and film. Key works include Azaleas (2006 British Composer Award), SET, Willie Stock (premiered at Aldeburgh Festival 2016), Ghost Songs (2018), and Mondrian (2019 Harpsichord Concerto).
Recent performances include Fred and Ginger with the London Symphony Orchestra and Dadaville at the First Night of the Proms (2015). He was the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s Composer in Association (2018–19) and served as a Director of the Ivors Academy until 2021.
