Gary Alan Fine is the James E. Johnson Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University. With a PhD in Social Psychology from Harvard University, he has held academic positions at the University of Georgia, University of Minnesota, and visiting roles at institutions including University of Cambridge, Oxford University, and Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

His research spans four major streams: controversial reputations (e.g., Joseph McCarthy, Warren Harding) in collective memory studies; ethnographic analysis of social movements (senior activists, Civil War enthusiasts); rumor theory (political/economic rumors in The Global Grapevine); and microsociological theory (group culture and civil society in The Hinge). Methodologically grounded in ethnography and qualitative analysis, his work bridges cultural sociology, social psychology, and organizational studies.
