Gary Younge is Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester, joining in 2020 after a distinguished career at The Guardian as columnist and editor-at-large. His research examines youth violence, social movements (particularly civil rights), inequality, race, immigration, and identity politics, with current focus on the Black presence in post-war Europe.
His interdisciplinary research connects sociology, political science, and media studies to analyze patterns of inequality and resistance. Current investigations explore the historical and contemporary experiences of Black communities across Europe, examining how racial identities form and transform in different national contexts.
Younge's publications demonstrate consistent focus on racial justice, media representation, and diaspora experiences across historical periods. Recent works explore cultural activism, documentary journalism, and the intersection of popular culture with racial politics.
