Garrett L. Walsh

Garrett L. Walsh, M.D. serves as Professor of Surgery in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He joined the institution in September 1990, achieved tenure as Professor in 2001, and holds dual leadership roles as Head of the Perioperative Enterprise (since 2006) and Executive Director of Surgical Facilities Expansion (since 2014).

His clinical expertise focuses on complex thoracic oncology procedures including lung resections, tracheal reconstructions, esophageal cancer surgeries, and mediastinal tumor operations. He specializes in minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), endoscopic stent placements, laser ablation of airway tumors, and collaborative spinal tumor resections with neurosurgery/orthopedics. His work frequently involves vascular reconstruction for advanced malignancies invading critical structures.

Dr. Walsh has delivered over 600 lectures on chest surgery topics and authored 53+ book chapters. He has collaborated on 120+ research protocols and served on institutional committees for a decade as an Adjuvant Ethicist. His current leadership in perioperative management and surgical facility design drives innovation in cancer surgery delivery systems.
