Garrath Wilson is a Senior Lecturer in Experience Design at the Loughborough Design School, Loughborough University, UK. He holds a PhD in Sustainable Design (2013) from Loughborough University, an MSc in Industrial Design (2006), and a BSc in Product Design (2003) from the University of Central Lancashire. His research focuses on sustainable design, circular economy principles, and the intersection of UX design with environmental responsibility. He leads the Perpetual Plastic for Food to Go (PPFTG) project as Principal Investigator and co-convenes the Design Research Society (DRS) Sustainability Special Interest Group.
Wilson’s work explores topics such as reusable packaging systems, consumer behavior change, and digital interventions for sustainability. He has contributed to high-impact projects like the RCUK/UKRI grants and advised on UN initiatives, including the Asia-Pacific Business Forum 2019. His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, emphasizing both theoretical and practical aspects of responsible design. Wilson supervises doctoral students in areas like sustainable fashion practices and service design, and his research has been featured in media outlets including BBC, Time, and The Guardian.
He advocates for interdisciplinary collaboration between academia and industry to address sustainability challenges, particularly in packaging and electronics waste. His educational initiatives include developing UX pedagogy frameworks and tools like the Crafting a Sustainable UX Vision Toolkit. Wilson’s recent focus includes exploring post-anthropocentric design frameworks and the role of digital technologies in shaping sustainable consumer behaviors.
