Dr. Garnet L. Anderson is Senior Vice President and Director of the Public Health Sciences Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington. Holding the Fred Hutch 40th Anniversary Endowed Chair, Dr. Anderson is a distinguished biostatistician and clinical trialist with over three decades of experience in chronic disease prevention and women's health research.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Washington (1989)
- MA in Mathematical Sciences from State University of New York at Binghamton (1983)
- BS in Mathematics from Northwest Nazarene College (1981)
Dr. Anderson is best known for her leadership role in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a landmark national study that has profoundly impacted women's health care. Her research focuses on the design and analysis of randomized trials, with particular expertise in women's health and chronic disease prevention. She has made significant contributions to understanding the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy, cancer prevention strategies, and the long-term effects of cancer treatments.
Her work has led to substantial public health impacts, most notably the 2002 finding that menopausal estrogen-plus-progestin therapy increased the risk of breast cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke and blood clots. These findings triggered a rapid decline in hormone therapy use and are estimated to have prevented 126,000 breast cancer diagnoses and saved approximately $35.2 billion in direct medical expenses in the U.S. alone over the subsequent decade.
Dr. Anderson's scientific contributions have been widely recognized:
- Elected to Washington State Academy of Sciences (2024)
- Named to Cancer Health 25: People Who Power Clinical Trials (2024)
- Recognized as one of 50 Changemakers of Public Health by UW School of Public Health (2020)
- Named ASA fellow (2020)
- Listed among 'world's most influential scientific minds' by Thomson Reuters (2016)
As principal investigator of the Fred Hutch-based WHI Clinical Coordinating Center, Dr. Anderson oversees the integration of many different studies within this large program, including Life and Longevity After Cancer (LILAC), which examines late- and long-term effects of cancer and its treatment among 13,000 aging cancer survivors. She also serves as a statistician with the SWOG Statistical Center and has contributed to local efforts to develop and evaluate prevention and screening methods for ovarian cancer.
Dr. Anderson is passionate about mentoring junior faculty and advancing public health research through innovative approaches that combine traditional research methods with new technologies like smartphones, apps, and wearables. Her current priorities include addressing the obesity epidemic, developing new prevention strategies, researching health disparities, and containing healthcare costs, particularly among cancer survivors.
