Garnet Anderson

Garnet Anderson is a Senior Vice President and Director of the Public Health Sciences Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, where she leads large-scale population studies to improve public health. She serves as Principal Investigator of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) Clinical Coordinating Center and co-leads the Life and Longevity After Cancer (LILAC) study focusing on cancer survivorship. Additionally, she is an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington.

Research Interests: Dr. Anderson specializes in Biostatistics and Clinical Trials, with a focus on Chronic Disease Prevention and Women's Health. Her work includes analyzing the risks of hormone replacement therapy, identifying biomarkers for ovarian cancer detection, and studying long-term health effects in cancer survivors. She also investigates Health Disparities, Obesity, and Cardiovascular Disease in women, integrating Mobile Health Technologies into future research designs.

Grants and Collaborations: She oversees the WHI, a landmark study in women’s health, and contributes to the SWOG Statistical Center. Her team’s work on hormone therapy risks led to significant public health shifts, preventing 126,000 breast cancer cases and saving $35.2 billion in medical costs. She mentors junior faculty and prioritizes addressing obesity, health disparities, and cancer care costs in her division.
