Gareth Williams is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing at the University of Chester, UK. He holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Birmingham, a PGCE from West London Institute of Higher Education, and an MA in PE, Sport, and Dance from Liverpool John Moores University. His research focuses on PE in Free Schools, performativity in education, middle management roles in PE, and the role of external providers in school sports.
Teaching roles include modules such as Introduction to Sports Coaching and Pedagogy and Pedagogy of PE. He actively supervises dissertation students in PE and Pedagogy. Professional activities include serving as External Examiner at the University of Wolverhampton and Worcester, consulting for Liverpool School Sports Partnership, and holding leadership roles in the North Western Counties Physical Education Association.
His research investigates performative pressures on school leadership, identity changes in Free Schools, and the impact of marketization on educational policies. Recent work emphasizes the balance between traditional models and inclusive approaches in PESS programs. He has contributed to peer-reviewed journals like International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics and Educational Review.
