Professor Gareth Wallis is an Associate Professor (Reader) in Exercise Metabolism and Nutrition at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham, where he also serves as Head of Research and Knowledge Transfer. He holds a PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences – University of Birmingham
- MSc (Dist.) Exercise Physiology – Loughborough University
- PhD Sport and Exercise Sciences – University of Birmingham
His research centers on nutrition and metabolism, particularly how macronutrients affect exercise performance, training adaptation, and metabolic health. He employs advanced human metabolic profiling techniques, including stable isotope tracers, mass spectrometry, and molecular biology. His work has significant translational applications in sports and health nutrition.
His recent publications highlight trends in carbohydrate metabolism, fat oxidation, and protein synthesis in response to exercise and nutritional interventions. Key themes include nutrient timing, fasted exercise, dual-carbohydrate ingestion, and metabolic flexibility.
Scientific Recognition:
- Fellow, Higher Education Academy (UK), 2015–present
- Editorial Board, International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism (2018–present)
- Associate Editor, Frontiers in Nutrition (Sport and Exercise Nutrition section, 2017–present)
- External Examiner, Newcastle University (2021–present)
- Scientific Review Panel Member, Swedish Research Council for Sport Science (2020–present)
Professor Wallis has successfully supervised 6 PhD and 3 Master’s students to completion and currently mentors two PhD candidates: Ollie Odell (carbohydrate nutrition and exercise metabolism) and Israel Podesta Donoso (exercise metabolism, nutrition, and energy balance). He leads research projects supported by organizations such as the BBSRC and Volac International Ltd. He also coordinates the Sports Nutrition module for undergraduate students and contributes to postgraduate education and research supervision.
His research is conducted within the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Birmingham, where he utilizes state-of-the-art facilities for metabolic and physiological assessment. He is actively involved in knowledge transfer and collaborates with industry and health sectors to apply research findings in real-world settings.
