Dr. Andy Blannin is a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Metabolism at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham. He is an expert in the physiological mechanisms through which exercise benefits individuals at risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. His academic roles include module lead for Exercise Metabolism and Athletic Training and Conditioning, and he supervises PhD research on appetite regulation.
His educational background includes a BSc in Physiology from Cardiff and a PhD in Exercise Immunology from Coventry.
Dr. Blannin's research focuses on the interaction between exercise and metabolic health, particularly postprandial lipaemia, appetite endocrinology, and insulin resistance. His work investigates how physical activity influences hormonal regulation of hunger, blood fat concentrations, and metabolic syndrome components. He has contributed significantly to understanding appetite suppression through sprint interval training, hydration effects of coffee, and neural responses to food cues after exercise.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on metabolic and endocrine responses to exercise in overweight and obese populations, often using controlled trials to assess food intake, hormonal markers, and body composition changes.
