Gareth Thomson is a Reader at Aston University's College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Applied Science. He holds roles such as Programme Director for Mechanical Engineering degrees and former Head of Group. His academic journey includes a BEng from Heriot-Watt University, MPhil from the same institution, and a PhD in Laser Materials Processing from the University of Dundee. He has extensive industry experience in automotive and manufacturing engineering.
Research focuses on engineering education alignment with industry needs, non-traditional manufacturing (additive manufacturing, Industry 4.0), and smart systems. He is a National Teaching Fellow (2016) and recipient of the Best KTP Project 2023 award. Active in professional bodies, he is a Principal Fellow of HEA and Chartered Engineer (IMechE).
