Gareth McKinley

Gareth McKinley is a Professor of Teaching Innovation in the School of Engineering at MIT, affiliated with the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is a leading authority in rheology – the study of material flow and deformation – focusing on non-Newtonian fluids. His research bridges fundamental science and industrial applications, including improving rheometers, developing synthetic snail slime for robotics, and optimizing materials for medical implants and consumer products. McKinley earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering at MIT and has collaborated globally, notably with KU Leuven’s SMaRT lab. He holds numerous patents and founded Cambridge Polymer Group.
