Eric S.G. Shaqfeh is the Lester Levi Carter Professor and Professor of Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. He holds dual appointments in the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME) and is a member of Bio-X and the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance. His research focuses on non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, polymer statistical dynamics, and suspension mechanics, with over 200 publications. He has received numerous awards, including the Bingham Medal (2011) and Alpha Chi Sigma Award (2018). He teaches courses on applied mathematics, complex fluids, and microhydrodynamics.
- Education: B.S.E. (Princeton, 1981), M.S. (Stanford, 1982), Ph.D. (Stanford, 1986)
- Professional Experience: NATO Postdoc (Cambridge, 1986), AT&T Bell Labs (1987–1989), Stanford faculty since 1990
His research interests span elastic instabilities, turbulent drag reduction, DNA dynamics, and microfluidic suspensions. He has pioneered computational models for viscoelastic fluids and 3D printing technologies like CLIP/iCLIP, enabling high-resolution microfluidic devices. His work bridges fluid mechanics, materials science, and biomedical applications.
Recent publications highlight advancements in semiconductor etching, CLIP-based 3D printing, and viscoelastic rheology. He advises numerous graduate students and has held visiting professorships at MIT and UW-Madison.
