Gareth Gavin is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing, where he has taught since 2017. He previously taught at the Universities of Sheffield and Sussex and completed his AHRC-funded PhD in 2011 through the London Consortium at Birkbeck, University of London. His academic work spans teaching undergraduate creative writing (fiction), the MA module Key Issues in Literary and Critical Theory, and since 2023, he has contributed to the MA in Gender, Sexuality and Culture with a module on 'Trans Theory'.
Gavin's research interests center on the intersection of creative and critical work, with ongoing engagement in film studies, urban studies, queer and trans theory, and class analysis. His creative practice informs and is informed by his theoretical writing, creating a distinctive cross-disciplinary approach. He frequently collaborates with artists and architects, contributing texts to projects exploring masculinity, referentiality, and urban environments.
His publications reveal consistent engagement with themes of gender identity, urban transformation, and the relationship between literature and other media. Gavin's work demonstrates a trajectory from early literary criticism on silent film to increasingly personal explorations of transmasculinity and queer identity, while maintaining experimental approaches to narrative form.

Gavin has received research support including a grant from the Canadian Centre for Architecture for his novel Midland and a post-doctoral Fellowship at the ICI Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry (2012-2014). His collaborative work with Adam Kaasa (Royal College of Art) on Uncommon Building demonstrates his commitment to cross-disciplinary approaches. His teaching now includes creative assessment options for students with creative practice backgrounds in his Trans Theory module.
