Gareth Evans is a Distinguished Honorary Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University (ANU). A prominent Australian political figure and academic, he served as a Federal Senator (1978–96), Minister in the Hawke and Keating governments, and later as ANU Chancellor (2010–19). His career spans international diplomacy, conflict prevention, and global policy advocacy.
Education: Melbourne High School, University of Melbourne, and Oxford University. Key roles include Co-Chair of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (2000–01) and Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (2008–10). Current advisory roles include the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect and ANU’s Asian-Australian Leadership Centre.
Research focuses on international relations, human rights, and governance. Notable publications include The Responsibility to Protect (2008) and Incorrigible Optimist (2017). His 1995 article Cooperative Security and Intrastate Conflict earned the Grawemeyer Prize. Awards include Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) and recognition for anti-apartheid work.
