University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centerمعرفی
Gang G. Yu serves as Associate Professor and Principal Investigator at UT Southwestern Medical Center, leading the Yu Lab which focuses on molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and frontotemporal dementia. His research program investigates disease-associated molecular machines, particularly the gamma-secretase complex, using integrated in vitro and in vivo approaches to elucidate pathological mechanisms.
Dr. Yu completed his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Calgary (1992-1996), followed by postdoctoral training at the University of Toronto's Center for Research into Neurodegenerative Diseases (1996-2001). He joined UT Southwestern in October 2001, establishing his independent research program focused on neurodegeneration.
The Yu Lab's research centers on dissecting molecular pathways in neurodegenerative diseases, with particular emphasis on gamma-secretase complex assembly, trafficking, and function. Their work explores how mutations in presenilins, nicastrin, and related proteins disrupt cellular homeostasis and drive pathological processes in Alzheimer's disease. This fundamental research aims to identify novel therapeutic targets through mechanistic understanding of protein complex dysregulation.
Analysis of Dr. Yu's publication record (2002-2008) reveals consistent focus on gamma-secretase components and their role in amyloid-beta processing. His work spans molecular characterization of protein interactions, cellular trafficking mechanisms, and functional consequences of disease-linked mutations, establishing critical connections between basic molecular biology and neurodegenerative pathology.
Dr. Yu actively mentors the next generation of scientists through direct supervision of Ph.D. students in Neuroscience and Biological Chemistry programs, along with postdoctoral fellows from diverse international backgrounds. His laboratory explicitly commits to building an inclusive workplace culture that welcomes researchers of all backgrounds, emphasizing professional growth and collaborative science.
The Yu Lab operates within UT Southwestern Medical Center's research ecosystem in Dallas, maintaining active collaborations while pursuing independent investigations into fundamental biological processes underlying neurodegeneration. The lab's physical location at 6000 Harry Hines Blvd provides access to advanced core facilities and interdisciplinary research networks central to their mission of making fundamental discoveries in disease mechanisms.
