Gang Chen is the Carl Richard Soderberg Professor of Power Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he directs the Pappalardo Micro/Nano Engineering Laboratory. His work bridges thermal transport, energy conversion, and water treatment technologies through interdisciplinary research in mechanical engineering, materials science, and physics.
- Key Research Areas: Nanoscale thermal transport, solar energy systems, thermoelectric materials, desalination via directional solvent extraction, and photomolecular phenomena at air-water interfaces
Scientific Recognition: Member of the National Academy of Sciences (2023), Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2018), and recipient of the Eringen Medal (2016). His team's cubic boron arsenide research was named a 2022 Physics World Top 10 Breakthrough.
Technological Impact: Invented solar steam generation devices without optical concentration, developed directional solvent extraction for desalination (Scientific American World Changing Idea), and advanced phonon transport understanding in superlattices. Current work explores non-reciprocal radiation in Weyl semimetals and tunable thermal materials.
