Gaina Carmen is a Professor and Director of the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED) at the University of Oslo's Department of Geosciences since 2016. Her research focuses on marine geophysics, plate tectonics, and the interconnections between Earth's solid structure, oceans, and atmosphere. She leads a team of ~75 researchers and has secured major grants including a Norwegian Centre of Excellence (10 Mil €) and European Space Agency funding.
Education: PhD from the University of Sydney (1999), MSc from the University of Bucharest (1987). Her work integrates geophysical data and modeling, with notable contributions to reconstructing ancient plate boundaries and polar region dynamics. Awards include election to the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2017).
Management roles include Board membership of the National Research School for Climate Studies (CHESS) and leadership in international collaborations like the Arctic-focused 'Changes at the Top of the World' project. She has supervised multiple PhD and Master's students and contributes to teaching at the University of Oslo and the Arctic University of Norway (UNIS).
