Gail Hoffman is an Associate Professor and Chair of Classical Studies at Boston College, with a courtesy appointment in the Art, Art History, and Film Department. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on cultural interactions between the Near East and Greece during the Early Iron Age (ca. 1050–700 BCE), examining archaeological evidence of Near Eastern immigrants and iconographic borrowings by Greek elites. She has excavated at Paestum, Italy, and Corinth, Greece.

Her teaching includes courses on ancient civilizations, fine arts, and history, such as Art and Myth in Ancient Greece, Culture of Athenian Democracy, and Greek Civilization. She also teaches elementary ancient Greek and Latin and co-curated exhibits at BC’s McMullen Museum.
Her research highlights include studying how artistic and archaeological evidence complements written records to illuminate past cultures. Key awards include a Fulbright Scholarship (Greece, 1986–1987), an NEA Grant (2010, joint with Nancy Netzer), and a Junior Fellowship at Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies (2001–2002).
Her publications include Imports and Immigrants: Near Eastern Contacts with Iron Age Greece (1997), co-edited volumes like Roman in the Provinces: Art on the Periphery of Empire (2014), and articles on Greek artistic interactions and Cycladic funerary practices.
