Gail Hayward is an Associate Professor and Clinical Director at the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Community Healthcare, affiliated with the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. She holds roles as a General Practitioner in Oxford city, Departmental Training Lead, and Clinical Teaching Associate at Exeter College. Her research focuses on improving diagnosis and management of common infections in primary care, particularly through advancing diagnostic technologies in community healthcare settings such as urgent care, midwifery, and hospital-at-home services.
She leads major studies including the TOUCAN diagnostic accuracy platform evaluating novel UTI diagnostics and the DURATION-UTI RCT investigating antibiotic durations for cystitis/pyelonephritis. She contributed to the PRINCIPLE/PANORAMIC trials and co-led the CONDOR collaboration for COVID-19 point-of-care testing. Her academic training includes MBBChir (Cambridge), D.Phil (Oxford), MRCP, DRCOG, and MRCGP qualifications.
Recent work emphasizes antimicrobial resistance patterns in recurrent UTIs, HIV viral load testing in community settings, and COPD diagnosis through innovative capnometer technology. She advocates for practical implementation of point-of-care tests in real-world healthcare environments, addressing challenges in diagnostic workflow integration and cost-effectiveness.
