Gaby Carney

Gaby Carney is a Senior Fellow at the Human Technology Institute (HTI) of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). She leads the AI Corporate Governance program and advises organizations on the safe and responsible use of AI. Her background spans strategy, public policy, management consulting, and law, with prior experience as a Partner at international firm Partners in Performance.

• Education: GAICD (Australian Institute of Company Directors, 2020), Master of International Law (University of Sydney, 2005), Bachelor of Arts/Laws (University of New South Wales, 1997).
• Research Focus: Human-centric systems for AI governance, organizational accountability, and cultural frameworks for responsible technology adoption.

Her work emphasizes the critical need for boards and executives to develop a 'minimum viable understanding' of AI, establish clear accountability structures, and invest in staff training. She has collaborated with UTS HTI on reports like the Australian Responsible AI Index 2024 and case studies on Telstra’s AI governance practices, supported by Minderoo Foundation funding.
