Gabriele Genge

Prof. Dr. Gabriele Genge serves as Professor and Managing Director at the Institute for Art and Art History at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Her work bridges German/French art history from the 18th century to the present with transdisciplinary, transcultural, and postcolonial perspectives. She contributes to research on the Black Atlantic, Mediterranean art, and Ottoman/Turkish contemporary art.

• Education: Studied at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (1985-1991), PhD in Freiburg (1996), Habilitation in Düsseldorf (2005).

Her research explores transcultural visual practices, gender/body discourses, and global art history, including projects on aesthetic temporalities, museum studies, and digital humanities. Recent publications focus on ambiguity in art, fetishism, and postcolonial critique across diverse journals and edited volumes.

Scientific awards include DFG fellowships (Graduate College, Paris, Heisenberg), Archives Nationales Dakar, and Schomburg Center New York fellowships. She actively participates in DFG research groups and networks.
